PULSED ELECTRO-MAGNETIC FIELD THERAPY (PEMF)
PEMF stands for Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field therapy. It is a safe, non-invasive drug free treatment of the musculoskeletal system used for a wide variety of conditions and ailments.

PEMF works by aiding the regeneration and energy output of the body's cells that may have been affected by injury or degeneration.

All of our body's functions rely on an electromagnetic exchange of ions between cells; natural electromagnetic energy controls our chemistry. When this energy is disrupted by injury or degeneration, our cells are impaired. When your cells aren’t healthy, your body isn’t healthy.
By introducing a complementary, low frequency electromagnetic field into the body, you can re-establish healthy electromagnetic exchanges between cells.
This has been shown to speed up the healing process in bone and soft tissue injuries, increase bone density, help reduce inflammation, improve circulation and blood oxygenation, and alleviate pain.

Magnetic fields are not condition specific because the cellular reaction occurs in all tissues, therefore PEMF therapy can be used to help with a wide range of conditions and symptoms.
OSTEOPOROSIS & BONE DENSITY
PEMF is used by NASA in the treatment of astronauts returning from space to prevent the bone loss and muscle atrophy associated with space travel. Following extensive research into the positive effects of PEMF, NASA documented how the benefits should be extended to mainstream medicine to improve bone density. PEMF is now used in 72% of US hospitals to treat Osteoporosis and to help with healing of non-union bone fractures.

Research has shown that PEMF can improve bone density by increasing the calcium transport across cell membranes, this leads to an increased absorption of calcium within the bone tissue, which can aid in the treatment and prevention of conditions such as osteoporosis, osteopaenia and osteochondrosis.
INJURY AND WOUND HEALING

PEMF stimulates micro circulation and collagen production, reducing swelling and speeding up wound healing. PEMF can be used to speed up the healing process in:

-
Bone fractures
-
Ligament injury
-
Muscle sprains and tears
-
Overuse/Sports injuries
-
Wounds (including pressure ulcers)
-
Tendonitis
-
Bursitis
ARTHRITIS AND OTHER INFLAMMATORY CONDITIONS
Arthritis is a degenerative, inflammatory condition affecting the joints, causing pain, stiffness and swelling, often having a debilitating impact on patients lives.
PEMF reduces inflammation by the release of inflammatory mediators, thus reducing pain and inflammation and increasing movement; the quality and function of cartilage has also been found to improve. PEMF can be more effective than medication in managing the pain associated with arthritis and has no side effects.

Due to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic mechanisms, PEMF can also help with conditions such as fibromyalgia.
By improving circulation, increasing blood oxygenation and stimulating the body's nervous and endocrine systems, PEMF has been reported to alleviate a wide range of symptoms as well as helping to improve sleep, relieve stress and aid general well being.
WHAT DOES THE TREATMENT INVOLVE?
PEMF is non-invasive, most people feel nothing at all during the treatment.
For your appointment you will remain fully clothed but will be asked to wear comfortable clothing without metal buttons/clips/zips etc.

PEMF can be a whole body treatment, beneficial for conditions such as osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, arthritis and general well being, or targeted to a localised area, best for injury repair such as bone fractures, muscle tears and bursitis.
PEMF works on a cumulative effect. The initial course of treatment consists of 8 sessions to be completed within a 2-3 week period. Each session lasts 30 minutes, the first appointment is slightly longer to include a consultation. Patients with chronic conditions may need regular ‘top-up’ sessions after the initial course, these can be booked as required.

WHO CAN HAVE PEMF TREATMENT?

PEMF is incredibly safe and suitable for most people. We are unable to treat patients with pacemakers or other electrical devices such as cochlear implants and intrathecal pumps. Also, pregnant women, patients with epilepsy, bleeding or clotting disorders such as haemophilia, any viral or fungal infection or cancer patients currently undergoing treatment.

Patients with metal implants such as pins, wires and joint replacements are able to have PEMF treatment.

A thorough consultation will take place before your first session to make sure PEMF is suitable for you and to discuss any concerns you may have.
